Our staying in Vratsa

Our staying in Vratsa
On 1st of April the Italian group,20 students, four teachers and the Principal of “don Lorenzo Milani” High School in Gragnano, flew to Vratsa to complete the second phase of the Comenius Bilateral School Partnership 2012-2014 “English and Science Conquer the New Spaces”. Vratsa welcomed the group with the charm of its local nature and fascinating history dating back to the time of ancient Thracians. In Vratsa they walked to the Complex Vestiteliat and through the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park with its fairy-tale trail forest. The park, crossed by the gorge of the Iskar river, is characterised by a lot of rock formations, karst forms and other nature landmarks. The visit to the Historical Museum with its famous Rogozensko silver treasure, the bronze Roman diploma and other precious artfacts helped students understand the long and colorful history of the town while the Ethnographic- Revival Complex with the Museum of Carriages gave the group an idea of the traditional lifestyle, crafts and culture of the population of Vratsa region of the end of XX century. Very impressive were the excursions to Ledenika Cave, Belogradchik Rocks and Baba Vida Fortress in Vidin. Anyway, the second phase of the project was mostly marked by a particular interest in science. On their first working day Italian and Bulgarian students were committed in a Tournament for Young School Scientists in which they were asked to prepare presentations on given topics. The visit to the faculty of Physics of Sofia University offered stimulating and interesting lab experiments. At the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant they were informed about the nuclear power plant with water-water energy reactor consisting of two circuits. In addition, the excursion to the Museum of Natural Science of Cherni Osam did not leave them indifferent. Later, through digital presentations students had to report what they had seen working with the Bulgarian partners. During the stay the hospitality was remarkable. Teachers, parents and the Principal did their best to offer a full immersion experience in the Bulgarian life. The Mayor met the group at the City Hall and expressed his enthusiasm for the European projects which give young people the opportunity to understand a different culture. The folk perfomance at the local theatre fascinated the group highlighting once again the value of past tradition these people preserve. Vratsa - town like the Balkan-ancient and young, the meaning is clear now. On the last day there was a farewell party with the preparation of Italian and Bulgarian dishes advertised in the Recipe Book written by the all the students during the school year.
